INTERVIEW 2022.2.08

Interview with Yuto NAGATOMO

Q: Since the start date, this is the second day of practice with the new team. How was it to return to Tokyo for practice after a long time?
A did not practice much until the start date. Today, there was a lot of sharpness, with intense battles for the ball and quick transitions between offense and defense. We were able to practice thoroughly, so it was really enjoyable. It was a practice session where I could positively feel that the team is changing.

Q: Do you think the concept of soccer will change from last season? Did you feel any signs of that during practice?
Not only maintaining possession by connecting passes firmly, but also having the driving force to move forward and always being aware of aiming for the goal are things the coach has really helped us develop, so I find it very rewarding.

Q: You were absent from the Okinawa camp for activities with the Japan national team. Do you feel a difference in tactical understanding with the other players around you?
A, since I was away for nearly a month, it is true that I am behind in understanding the coach's tactics and applying them on the pitch due to the delayed reunion. As we approach the season opener, I will just keep working hard every day in practice to catch up quickly.

Q: Daily practice cannot be wasted, can it?
Not only during practice, but also in meetings, I can internalize the tactics intended by the coach, and there are many things that can be done both on and off the pitch, so I want to work on that thoroughly.

Q: With less than two weeks until the opening, the atmosphere is finally building up. Have you switched your mindset after returning from the Japan national team activities?
A, in terms of mindset, I have always switched back and forth between the Japan national team and my club. The Japan national team is the Japan national team, and Tokyo is Tokyo, so I am determined to clearly separate the two and start fresh mentally.

Q: What does player Nagatomo want to embody in a changing team?
It is naturally necessary to understand the coach's tactics, and it is also important to express them through play. However, at the same time, in terms of bringing out your own characteristics and being active for the team, you must appeal as an individual or you won't be able to play in matches. I want to make sure I can clearly show my own characteristics within the team's tactics.
