INTERVIEW 2026.3.30

Silent Fighting Spirit

A two-game series against FC Machida Zelvia that we absolutely cannot lose. Teruhito NAKAGAWA, quietly sharpening his fangs within limited playing time, spoke about his resolve and determination.

Back-to-back matches against FC Machida Zelvia on April 1 and April 5. Last season, there were also consecutive league and Emperor's Cup matches toward the end, and the frustration of not advancing to the Emperor's Cup Final Round still wells up inside. This time, the tournament regulations are different, and there is a possibility that the outcome could be decided by a penalty shootout.

However, what is clear is that in order for us to be in the top ranks and seriously aim for the league championship, we absolutely must win this series of consecutive matches. Both teams need to show an attitude of going for the win. It is no exaggeration to say that everything depends on this series of matches.

Since Machida was promoted to the J1 League, consistently achieving good results is proof of their solid strength. Their style is clear and well-executed, making them by no means an easy opponent.

I believe the key factor that will decide the outcome of this series of matches is the 'intensity and toughness in one-on-one battles.' The question is whether we can hold our ground and keep possession of the ball. Also, since the opponent is a team that scores many goals from crosses, we must be very cautious about that. However, on the flip side, we also have opportunities to score from crosses. This battle will be one of the major factors that determine the match.

Based on the matches so far, I believe the team is required to have 'flexibility' and 'challenge' according to the situation.

For example, in the recent match against Mito Hollyhock, there were many moments when we felt unsettled by the opponent's pressing. Factors like the wind also played a part, but the question was whether to calmly connect passes to break down the opponent or to use long balls to advance. Relying solely on one approach obviously makes it easier for the opponent to read and control the game, making it difficult for us. From here on, the ability to switch between these tactics and maintain balance will be crucial. Personally, I want to challenge myself to connect the ball more securely.

In every match, many good aspects have emerged. While firmly continuing those, we must further improve the quality of decision-making on the pitch.

When I focus on myself, the only match I played as a starter was against JEF United Ichihara Chiba.

Of course, I strongly want to play more on the pitch and contribute to the team's victory by increasing my playing time. However, on the other hand, this season the player roster for each position is deep, and the competition is fierce. I myself feel that even with limited playing time, I have been able to create opportunities, and in the match against Chiba where I started, I believe I was able to show my abilities to some extent. That is why, with the limited chances I get, I must firmly prove my abilities when I am on the pitch. How I can turn those chances into goals is the most important thing for me right now.

The match venue, Nozuta (Machida GION Stadium), will be the first venue we visit in Tokyo. There is also a somewhat unpleasant image associated with visiting as the opponent. (2016 season, played for Machida)

However, we absolutely want to defeat Machida, who is currently one rank above us. Above all, our sole desire is to score goals and win against Machida.

We have earned this position (ranking) ourselves, and I firmly believe there is definitely a chance to win the league championship. Whether we seize or squander this opportunity is now entirely up to us.

Win two consecutive games here and get closer to the top-ranked Kashima Antlers by at least one point. We must be aware of our position and fight together as a team to seize the opportunity.

Back-to-back matches against the same opponent are difficult, but I personally want to be a force that ensures the team wins the championship and a strength to secure victory in the consecutive matches against Machida.
