INTERVIEW2022.2.24

Interview with Ryoma WATANABE

Q: How do you feel after reflecting on the entire opening match?
In the beginning, I think everyone had a chaotic impression, but for me, it was within expectations. Honestly, there is no part that requires reflection on that. After the difficult moments, we gradually started to play our football, and we were able to connect from the first half to the second half, so I don't think there was anything to be pessimistic about regarding the overall match.

Q: Did you feel that it was expected to struggle somewhat in the first 15 minutes and that you had to endure it?
A, I definitely thought it wouldn't go well at first. Based on my experience, I believe that in playing a new style of football, it's normal for the initial phase of the first match not to go well. Since we are doing something new this season, I think it's natural that it won't go well.

Q: In communicating within the team, which was the point of correction, offense or defense?
A, I spent more time on defense. Since I wasn't very good at defense, I was conscious of making corrections there.

Q: It seemed that the rhythm improved during the time spent circulating the ball at the final line. Did you feel that it went smoothly there?
As for whether we achieved the tempo and speed we are aiming for... can we say we reached the point of creating rhythm...? Ideally, we want to aim for a higher quality, but if I were to judge at this point, I think we were able to do it smoothly.

Q: I believe you have been gaining experience playing as a full-back in practice matches, but did you feel a sense of confidence that you can perform well?
A, since we were up against Kawasaki Frontale, there are areas where we need to do more, but I think there are still things I need to confirm within myself. During the match, there were times when I was suddenly used as a side back due to accidents, but I think it was the first time I challenged a match starting as a side back. I felt that there were parts where I was not performing well and putting a burden on the defense around me. I hope to practice more and grow from here.

Q: How do you feel about the attacking part?
A, unlike defense, I believe that if I can't attack, there is no meaning in being on the pitch, so I think I have to do that.

Q: I believe we have a good feeling moving forward, but we want to express our football while also achieving results.
A. As a fundamental thought, I believe that the soccer chosen by Tokyo to achieve results is this. Although the results did not come, I think it is good because things are going well; however, I believe this (the opening match) is where that ends. From now on, we need to focus not only on playing good soccer but also on winning. It is meaningless to lose even if we play well, so we must prioritize winning first while not forgetting to express our own style for that purpose.
