<Match Review>
Tokyo has been battling through a congested schedule with seven consecutive matches since entering April. Today's Levain Cup Group Stage Match 5 marked the final match of this series. With only two matches left in the group stage and a direct confrontation between teams tied for third place, it was a must-win game as they faced Júbilo Iwata away.
As Coach Albert has stated, in the Levain Cup, we are combining experienced players with young players to promote their growth. In this match, Yuki KAJIURA was used in the starting lineup for the first time since being promoted to the top team, and Kashif BANGNAGANDE also took the pitch as a starter for the first time since returning from a serious injury. Renta HIGASHI, who started in the previous Levain Cup match against Shonan, also started in this match against Jubilo Iwata. Experienced players Yojiro TAKAHAGI, Keigo HIGASHI, and Hirotaka MITA are leading the young players and forming a lineup that is responsible for guiding the team to victory.
After fending off a situation where they were pressured in front of the goal from the left in the 4th minute of the first half, Tokyo maintained possession of the ball and gradually pushed Juntendo back into their own half. In the 8th minute of the first half, they slowly moved the ball, including the defensive line, to press the opponent, and the midfielder, Higashi, switched the play. Receiving a pass in the center of the midfield, he passed it to Mita and sprinted forward. Mita and Takahagi connected with a one-touch pass, and he received the ball freely, exploiting a gap in the opponent's defense, and took a shot. Although it was stopped by the opposing goalkeeper, they quickly created a chance with a build-up that varied in pace. In the 28th minute of the first half, Takahagi's flick allowed Keita YAMASHITA to break free in front of the goal area. He swung with his left foot outside the penalty area but couldn't hit the target. In the 30th minute of the first half, Takahagi created another chance. After winning the ball in their own half, Takahagi received a vertical pass and left the ball with a heel flick into space. As Yoshifumi ran forward and received the ball, he gained speed and carried it right outside the penalty area to aim for a shot. It was a shot that targeted the upper left corner of the goal, but it was thwarted by a fine save from the opposing goalkeeper.
The direct match between Shonan, ranked first in the group, and Fukuoka, ranked second, has concluded at the end of the first half, with both teams tied at 9 points, widening the point difference to 5. Even a draw in the match against Iwata will eliminate the possibility of advancing from the group stage.
Tokyo, wanting to continue the good flow they created in the first half, saw Mita steal the ball from the opponent in the 8th minute of the second half and pass it to the middle range behind the opponent. Yamashita reacted and broke free to slide the ball into the goal, but this was ruled offside. However, Tokyo continued the flow and capitalized on a good opportunity. In the 10th minute of the second half, Yamashita received a wedge pass from Henrique and, while being pressured by the opponent's marker, connected with Mita on the left side with a one-touch pass. Mita, controlling the ball at the left corner of the penalty area, sent a cross into the space between the opponent's goalkeeper and defender, and Kajiura, who dove in, connected with a one-touch to give Tokyo the lead. Tokyo wanted to control the game and maintain their lead, but in the 18th minute of the second half, Yuki OTSU broke free, and in the 22nd minute, they faced a crisis when a cross was met in front of the goal, but Go HATANO made a big save to deflect the shot and repel Iwata's counterattack. However, in the 23rd minute of the second half, after being shaken wide from a short corner, they were equalized when Fabian GONZALEZ pushed the ball in front of the goal.
As the match entered the final stages, the game opened up slightly, allowing Iwata to create some chances near the goal, but the defense remained resilient, maintaining their strength in sliding to the ball side and in one-on-one situations. Conversely, in the 43rd minute of the second half, Yamashita broke behind the opponent's defense, and a loose ball from a collision with the opposing goalkeeper fell to Kajiura, who had come in to support. Kajiura took a shot towards the unguarded goal, but it hit the crossbar and went wide. In the 45+7th minute of the second half, Mita took a long-range shot from a position closer to the right side of the goal, but it was deflected off the right post. As they failed to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, just before the end of the match, a cross led to a push into the goal area, and they were unable to clear it, allowing the loose ball to be picked up and conceding a turnaround goal.
Young players were active, and veteran players led the team, creating decisive chances multiple times, but it ended in a frustrating defeat.
[Interview with Coach Albert PUIG ORTONEDA]
Q, please review the game.
A, the flow of the match can be divided into two phases. One is the period when we were able to dominate the game with the ball. However, there was a period of 10 to 15 minutes after we scored a goal when we conceded our dominance to the opponent. We need to improve on playing defensively after scoring a goal.
However, after that, we were able to regain control of the match. Throughout the game, I believe we created multiple chances worthy of victory. However, in soccer, if you create decisive chances but fail to capitalize on them, it leads to situations where the opponent gets their chances.
Naturally, after losing a match, one feels anger. However, I remain calm. The team is currently in a growth phase. I believe we must give young players opportunities to foster their development. It is difficult to impose a congested schedule on players participating in the league. In that sense, I think rotation is inevitable. In such situations, I trust my instincts to decide the lineup. Especially this season, I feel that I must utilize players in this way, so I am organizing the team based on my instincts.
I believe the players who played today performed well with the aim of victory. I am particularly satisfied with the performance of the young players, and there were many positive takeaways. My role is to develop Tokyo into a great club over the years. Naturally, no one wishes to be eliminated in the group stage of the Levain Cup. However, I believe my player selections for this tournament were not wrong. I think that is the player selection we need.
Q: What was the intention behind the early substitution in the second half and what were your expectations for starting Kajihira?
Regarding Yoshifumi Kashi, we had planned from the beginning to limit his playing time as he has just returned from injury after discussing with the medical team. Renta HIGASHI was playing well. However, as a team, we were going through a tough period, so we intended to bring in Okazaki to stabilize the team.
I want to give all young players, including Kajiura, a chance as much as possible. Recently, I have been paying attention to his (Kajiura's) play during training. I had a positive feeling about it. Despite being only 18 years old, I believe he has made a significant contribution to the team as a starter. We approached today's match with young players, including a 17-year-old center-back and an 18-year-old defensive midfielder. I think their growth is very positive news. Although I regret losing today's match, if we were able to use young players and promote their growth instead, I believe that in the long run, today's match will have been a great gain.

<Yuki KAJIURA>
Q: How was your first professional goal?
For me, more than my first goal, I wanted the team's victory the most. I had another big chance as well, and while I am happy about my first goal, the frustration of not being able to bring home the result of victory is what matters most.
Q: I think it was in a one-anchor shape during the attack, how was that part?
When I was U-18, I played as a double pivot, so we talked about one of us being involved with the ball, and I played with that in mind.
Q: I think we were able to showcase our strengths overall, what do you think?
A, throughout the first half, I was trying to engage well with the ball, but there were several instances where I lost possession. As a central midfielder, that play is critical, so I want to become a player who makes no mistakes, and I believe that is a point for reflection.
Q: It was impressive how you boldly aimed for vertical passes, but how do you reflect on the match?
Personally, I wish I could have seen a bit more. I feel that I could have played more boldly since I could only complete one or two side-change passes.
Q: Did you feel anything from players around you, such as Takahagi, Higashi, and Watanabe?
A, both Yojiro TAKAHAGI and Keigo HIGASHI and Ryoma WATANABE are playing with the most positive attitude, and they helped me a lot, making it very easy for me. They took good supporting positions, and being close allowed me to play by looking at those areas, so for me, it was a match where I was supported by those around me.
<Kojiro YASUDA>
Q: How did you feel while preparing, knowing that your peers like Kajiura and Matsuki were playing in matches before you?
A, of course, I felt regret, and I approached the match with the determination to do my best, but I think the issue arose where I couldn't capitalize on the decisive chances that I had.
Q: How did you feel when you were called by the coach?
A, I finally got a chance, so I entered the match with the feeling that I would give it my all.
Q: I think we were able to show a difference in dribbling breakthroughs and attacking aspects.
A, I am confident in that part, but I think I need to focus on the results of whether I can lead the team to victory, as that aspect is lacking, so I need to keep that in mind moving forward.
Q, please review the scene where you couldn't take the shot.
There was some hesitation about the position of the ball, whether to go for a volley or to turn around once, which led to that shot.
I want to be able to make those judgments confidently by actively working on my own through practice, as well as through experience.
Q: It has been said that the results are lacking, but it seemed that the connecting part in the midfield before that was done well.
A, that part is also my job, and I want to connect the back and the front, while showcasing my characteristics at the starting point, and lead to results.
Q: The match time was short today, but how confident are you that you can perform well from the start?
A, I hadn't been able to play in many matches, so it took time to regain my confidence, but I was able to start confidently today with my first touch and first play.
