10/25 Keigo HIGASHI Interview

Q: This week, we have my close friend Nagai playing for Nagoya.
A, when was the last time we faced each other? It's been a while, so I'm really looking forward to it. I wasn't part of the squad in the first half against Nagoya and couldn't compete against Kenta (Coach Hasegawa), so this time I want to show my energetic self.

Q: It will be in the form of receiving high press from player Nagai.
A, I don't want to receive that (laughs). You need to come at about 60%. That press on the anchor is scary. However, I think that is the selling point of Kenta-san (Masaru HASEGAWA)'s soccer, so if we can get around that, I believe we will have a chance, and I think it will be that kind of match.

Q, There is still a possibility for ACL.
A, as an individual, I don't really care about the rankings. This season, I have often been unable to play at the start, and during that time, I felt the joy of being able to play again and that there is value in playing as an athlete. There is also a sense of urgency that I must perform well in every match to stay on the field. This match is against a team led by Kenta (Coach HASEGAWA), who I have been playing against until last season, and with Nagai on the team, I am motivated, but first, I want to play well and help the team win.

Q: How will you stop player Nagai?
A, if they run behind the defense, we won't be able to catch up. However, while Nagai is often noticed for his speed, he is a smart player who excels at positioning and staying in places where he can't be marked. The players behind him need to be cautious, and if he makes a good run from a good position, we won't be able to keep up. I think managing that risk is quite important. Ideally, when we move the ball and make the defense run, it would be best if we could exhaust their power when we have the ball. I know his strengths because I've played with him, and he always makes plays that help us. I'm looking forward to facing him.

Q: Do you have any special feelings since you were close with player Nagai?
A, I really wanted to play together for a long time and I wished the player would stay in Tokyo. That’s because he was a valuable player for me, both on and off the pitch. It’s unfortunate that he transferred, but this is the professional world, and such things are to be expected.I accept that, and since we have been together for five years, I would be happy if we could have a good match and exchange jerseys at the end.

Q: What do you think about Coach Kenta HASEGAWA?
A, I have definitely grown thanks to Coach Kenta (Masaru HASEGAWA). I can only express my gratitude. Since I couldn't play in front of Coach Kenta (Masaru HASEGAWA) in the first half of the season, I want to compete seriously and play in a way that makes people think, 'I wouldn't want to face Keigo.'

Q: Is the time spent working with Kenta (Coach HASEGAWA) on defense as an anchor paying off?
A, there is no doubt about it. The defensive aspects, the fighting spirit, and the mentality have really been honed. I believe that is what is currently benefiting me in the anchor position. I also think that it was Coach Kenta (Masaru HASEGAWA) who has helped extend my playing career. I am truly happy to be able to play under such a coach.

Q: This season, you have been trying out a new position and going through trial and error. What are your thoughts on it now?
A, it is very fulfilling. While taking on new challenges, there is a lot to think about, and it is very refreshing and enjoyable.
