INTERVIEW2022.2.08

Interview with Yuto NAGATOMO

Q: Since the start date, this is the second day of practice with the new team. How was it to return to Tokyo for practice after a long time?
A, we didn't practice much leading up to the start date. Today was very dynamic, with intensity in ball contests and quick transitions between offense and defense, so it was really enjoyable to practice thoroughly. It was a practice where I could feel that the team is changing, in a good way.

Q: Do you think the concept of soccer will change from last season? Did you feel any signs of that during practice?
It's not just about maintaining possession of the ball by connecting well, but also about having the drive to move forward and the constant awareness of aiming for the goal, which the coach has really instilled in us, so I feel it's very rewarding.

Q: You were absent from the Okinawa camp for activities with the Japan national team. Do you feel a difference in tactical understanding with the other players around you?
It is true that I have fallen behind in understanding the coach's tactics and applying them on the pitch, as I have not been here for nearly a month, which means my integration has been delayed. As we approach the season opener, I just need to work hard in daily practice to catch up quickly.

Q: Daily practice cannot be wasted, can it?
In addition to practice, I can also internalize the tactics intended by the coach during meetings, and there are many things I can do both on and off the pitch, so I want to work on that diligently.

Q: With less than two weeks until the opening, the atmosphere is finally building up. Have you switched your mindset after returning from the Japan national team activities?
A, in terms of mindset, I have always switched between the Japan national team and my club team, and the Japan national team is the Japan national team, while Tokyo is Tokyo, so I am determined to clearly separate them and start fresh mentally.

Q: What does player Nagatomo want to embody in a changing team?
Of course, it is necessary to understand the coach's tactics, and it is also important to express that in play. However, at the same time, in order to showcase your own characteristics and contribute to the team, you must appeal as an individual to get on the field. I want to ensure that I can express my own characteristics within the team's tactics.
