[Player and Coach Comments]
4 minutes left for a dramatic comeback. A thrilling victory, a major win on enemy territory!!
As a conclusion to the expedition in Spain, the Juan ALANO Cup was held (Juan ALANO was a former player of Deportivo La Coruña). For Tokyo, under the guidance of Coach Hara, the players and staff were looking forward to seeing how much of their own football they could showcase against Deportivo, which serves as a tactical model for them.
From the start of the match, Tokyo aggressively attacked, catching their opponent off guard. On the other hand, Deportivo seemed to be carefully assessing Tokyo's strength, taking a more defensive stance. Kelly showcased his abilities, evading the two defensive midfielders, Sergio Dussel, who came to mark him, and passed the ball forward. However, the solidness of the defensive line prevented any decisive moments from being created. After 15 minutes, Deportivo gradually began to show their strength. Valeron appeared in key areas and delivered through balls. There were some dangerous moments, but including Shiota, our defensive line also did not allow any clear chances. The match went into halftime at 0-0.
In the second half, Deportivo made substitutions. At the 17th minute on the right side, from Munitis to Valeron in the center. Valeron played a one-two with Tristan in the narrow space in front of the goal, then made a short through pass to Victor. Victor broke through the defensive line, got free, and scored the opening goal. However, just when it seemed the momentum would shift, at the 18th minute, Baba made a vertical through pass on the right side. Lucas received it, cut inside to evade the defender, and took a shot. The goalkeeper deflected it, but it still resulted in an equalizing goal. After that, La Coruña aggressively launched attacks, unwilling to end the match like this. Tokyo, showing signs of fatigue, made substitutions to bring in fresh players. Both sides created chances but failed to convert, and it seemed the match would end in a draw and go to penalties. Then at the 41st minute, Lucas made a through pass in front of the goal, but it was blocked by a defender. However, Kajiyama reacted to the rebound. He positioned himself ahead of the opponent to take the ball, made a one-touch shot. The shot from outside the penalty area curved, skimmed over the goalkeeper’s hand, and went straight in. The dramatic go-ahead goal sparked a huge cheer from the stands and the bench. For nearly 10 minutes including stoppage time, they withstood Deportivo’s fierce attacks and the match ended, achieving a remarkable victory over a strong opponent on their home ground.
