Revenge Match

The opponent for the 2nd round of the Nabisco Cup is J1's Ichihara. In the first match held on June 12th (Sat), Tokyo dominated both in terms of shots, with 24 shots compared to Ichihara's 11, and in terms of content. Yukihiko scored in the 38th minute of the first half, and although they entered the second half with a 1-point lead, they were unable to score a second goal and ended up losing due to consecutive equalizers and a reversal. In order to advance to the next quarterfinals, they needed to win the second match (away) by a difference of 2 points or more, but it seemed possible based on the feeling of the first match. Before kick-off at the Ichihara Seaside Stadium, the call of "Tokyo! Tokyo!" echoed from the large cheering squad of about 150 people who had rushed from Tokyo. In the pouring rain, it's impossible for the players not to be moved by the sight of the fans continuing to cheer passionately without even using umbrellas.

One-sided game

The match became one-sided for Tokyo right after the start. Tokyo collected the ball to Kaga, who started as an attacking MF on this day, and dominated the midfield with fast passing between Yukihiro, the right MF, and FW Amaral. They created rhythm with accurate direct passes that took away J1's share, and the timing was perfect for Tokyo's proud fullbacks to move up and add thickness to the attack. In the 2nd minute, a sharp dribble from Kaga led to a last pass to Okamoto, but the shot went over the bar. In the 6th minute, Yukihiro, who had penetrated deep on the right side, made an exquisite centering, but Amaral's header went straight to the keeper. During this time, it seemed like a matter of time before Tokyo scored in a completely one-sided game. In the 7th minute, Amaral jumped into an exquisite centering aimed at the gap between the opponent's DF and GK from Kaga, who kept the ball on the left side, and scored a long-awaited opening goal with a powerful diving header. Ichihara's "defensive key player" and Japan national team DF Nakaniwa was unable to play due to injury, and the balance of defense collapsed. The check on Amaral and the marking in the midfield were weak, and the defense line was torn apart by Tokyo's brilliant passing. Even when attacking, there was no follow-up after giving the ball to FW Takeda, and the rhythm of the attack was not established because the passes did not connect. After this, Tokyo continued their fierce attacks, with Amaral in the 19th minute and Okamoto in the 22nd minute taking decisive shots. The highlight was in the 31st minute, when Fujiyama intercepted a pass and passed it to Yukihiro on the left side. Yukihiro made a direct one-two with Amaral in the center and dribbled in to score a goal. It was a perfect combination play straight out of a high-level textbook.

Complete victory! 4 goals, the most this season!

After the start of the second half, we were caught off guard and conceded a goal. A long pass from the Chiba DF found FW Takeda on the left side of the front line, who then headed it to the center. Enrique ran in and easily slipped it past the goalkeeper Horiike who had come out. We were dominating in the first half of the first game, but conceded a goal in the second half and lost, so there was a moment of unease. However, that unease was quickly dispelled by the calm movements of the players who showed no signs of being shaken. In the 52nd minute, Amaral crossed from the left side. Yukihiro, who received the ball in the center, was fouled while trying to dribble past the opponent, resulting in a penalty kick. Yukihiro took the kick, but it was saved by the goalkeeper's fine save. In the 54th minute, Amaral's powerful header from a corner kick from the left side hit the Chiba DF and rolled to Yukihiro, who then crossed it again. This time, Kaga pushed it into the Chiba goal with a powerful header. On the other hand, Chiba tried to get the ball to Baron, the current J1 top scorer who was subbed in during the second half, but Sandro marked him tightly. Enrique, who is the key to their attack, was also well contained by the double pivot of Asari and Koike, and was not allowed to play freely. The game continued at Tokyo's pace, but in the 86th minute, Yukihiro, Amaral, and Yukihiro once again showed a brilliant direct combination play on the left side, with Yukihiro breaking free and crossing it after evading the oncoming goalkeeper. Kaga was waiting there and calmly kicked it in with his right foot, sealing the game. In the final minutes of the game, we were awarded a penalty kick due to Umayama's foul, but Horiike made a fantastic save and the game ended. Tokyo, who had been pushing the game throughout, defeated Chiba 2-1 in the first game and 4-1 in the second, for a total of 5-3, and advanced to the quarter-finals. Next up, we will face the "Star Army" Yokohama F.Marinos! (Manager Okuma's comment) In the first half, we were able to dominate with our physicality, but in the second half, our physicality dropped and we were caught with the ball more often. However, the number of attacking runs from our fullbacks increased, so I am satisfied with our physical performance. Kaga played well, and I think it was because he has been consistently performing well even in the B team. I hope he can maintain this level in the upcoming league games.
