[Player/Coach Comments]
Looking to ride the momentum in the 3rd match, facing the strong Shimizu S-Pulse
In this 3rd match of the 2nd stage, Tokyo will face Shimizu S-Pulse at home. In the previous match, Tokyo won a decisive victory in the away game against Sapporo and is riding a wave of momentum, while S-Pulse is entering the 2nd stage one match late and lost to Kashima in the previous match. It can be seen that they are not yet in top form, so it is important to strike them down firmly and maintain the momentum. Both teams are strong in attacking from the sides, so the key is to not lose in that aspect. As coach Ohkuma says, it is important to "defend like Tokyo and score decisively to win" in this game.
Shimizu S-Pulse, who will be without Sawato due to a suspension, will start MF Hiramatsu. On the surface, the team will maintain their usual 3-5-2 formation, but in reality, they will have 4 players in the backline with Ichikawa, who is usually a right wing-back, playing as a defender. The midfield will consist of a double pivot with Ito and Toda, while attacking MFs Hiramatsu and Alex will be positioned on the wings. They have carefully studied Tokyo's style of play and have formed their formation accordingly.
Yukihiko fights hard. He creates chances in a typical Tokyo style...
After scoring a large number of goals in the previous game, there was a fear that the backlash would come, but Tokyo showed an aggressive game from the start. In the 2nd minute, Sato sends a sharp cross from the right side. Although it ended up being offside, Sato showed a sharp movement and was energetic today as well. In the 11th minute, Sato's cross is punched away by S-Pulse GK Hata, and Kelly picks up the loose ball and makes a last pass to the front of the goal. Here, Masamitsu KOBAYASHI makes a move, but is defended by the GK. In the 14th minute, Kelly heads the ball from a side change by Komine from the left, and in the 17th minute, Sato's free kick hits the wall and Seigo KOBAYASHI runs in, but is just a step behind... Tokyo creates chances with attacks centered around Sato's right side, which is the "Tokyo pattern". On the other hand, S-Pulse connects passes neatly and when there is a chance, Amaral cuts inside, but Tokyo's DF marks FW Baron tightly, making it difficult to get the ball into the penalty area. On the contrary, Tokyo's DF frequently intercepts the last pass to Baron. They try to quickly attack by passing to the front line, but S-Pulse's DF pushes up quickly and they are caught offside three or four times. In the 39th minute, Amaral dribbles into the left corner of the penalty area and takes a shot that looks like it was aimed at the goal, but it narrowly misses. In the 42nd minute, Sato once again sends a sharp ground pass that reminds us of the own goal by Sapporo in the previous game, but it doesn't reach Miura who has come out. They escape from the corner kick and are unable to turn the chance into a goal, and the first half ends.
Yukihiko → Amaral → Kelly's combination takes the lead, but...
In the first half, S-Pulse's attack was not particularly threatening, but in the beginning of the second half, the first chance was created by Alex → Baron's post-play. In the 46th minute, just outside the penalty area in front of the goal, Baron was fouled and earned a free kick, which Alex aimed for the goal. However, the ball hit the crossbar and was saved by the goalpost. In the 47th minute, Tokyo's Kelly crossed from the left and Kobayashi Seigo headed the ball. In the 51st minute, Ito Tetsuya attacked from an interception and took a shot. In the 53rd minute, Miura fought for a loose ball and passed it to Sato, who crossed it to Amaral, but he couldn't score with his header. S-Pulse also created chances with Alex frequently breaking through from the side, but Tokyo's defenders blocked their attempts to score.
Both teams lost their pressing game and the match became a fast-paced back-and-forth battle, lacking in finesse. In the 64th minute, Tokyo substituted Ashari for Kina, hoping to regain their attacking rhythm with his ball control skills. Then, in the 70th minute, Miura once again stole the ball in midfield and passed it to Kelly in front of the goal. Despite being surrounded by defenders, Kelly crossed the ball to the right side. Sato was waiting and sent a long ball to the far side, where Amaral headed it down for Kelly to finish with a header! Tokyo scored the first goal with a classic combination play.
Tokyo, which was energized by this, started attacking from the counterattack with Kina as the starting point, but the S-Pulse DF also showed resilience. And in quick succession, FW Kuboyama and Baron were replaced by FW Yamazaki and Yokoyama. This player substitution would later prove to be a success... In the 76th minute, Alex, who was free in the penalty area after a lob from the back, took a shot, which was initially blocked by the post, but Alex connected again and DF Saito, who had moved up for the set piece, headed the ball. Once again, Sandro bounced it back, but Yokoyama was there to volley it in. The ball pierced the net in a spectacular fashion, and Tokyo was quickly caught up again.
In the 82nd minute, Alex's free kick once again hit the bar. In the 83rd minute, Tokyo substituted Kaga for Seigo Kobayashi, but both teams continued to exchange counterattacks and set pieces. However, neither team could find a breakthrough and the game went into extra time.
Second time on this stage, heading into overtime at home game...
S-Pulse, like in the latter part of the second half, has FW YokoYama moving wide and Yamazaki making quick vertical movements to break through the Tokyo DF. Tokyo changed Fujiyama to the right side, Ito to the left side, and Komine to the center, and set up a formation to respond to S-Pulse's attacking unit, including Alex.
Immediately after the start of the extension, DF Ichikawa aims for a goal with a long shot. In the 92nd minute, this time Tokyo, Kina takes a middle shot. Both teams were frantically attacking and defending, and they were putting all their strength into attacking. In the 98th minute, Tokyo picked up the loose ball from the corner kick and Shimizu S-Pulse. When all of Tokyo's players were pressing forward and stopped moving for a moment, Alex dribbled up the center and passed to Yamasaki on the right side. At the end of Yamasaki's soft cross, there was Ichikawa, who had come up from the left side... Ichikawa threw himself at the ball in the penalty area and shot. They were easily defeated by a V-goal...
As coach Ookuma said, "The problem was the transition from attack to defense. Even though we were aware of the short corner, we couldn't switch to defense," the aggressive mindset can lead to a momentary lapse. It's a shame that we couldn't keep up the good form and ended up with a disappointing result, once again in a home game. We must not forget the toughness of J1 and this disappointment, and must use it to our advantage in the next game.
[Coach Zemnovich's Comment]
"Today we played with a back four, and although we were pushed back on the sides at times, I think it worked well. The most important thing is to play Shimizu S-Pulse's style of football, not to adapt to the opponent, but to be flexible in our approach. The players showed in the second half of the 90 minutes, and even in extra time, that they could maintain their physicality."
[Coach Okuma's Comment]
"In the end, we needed to score in the first half. In extra time, our goal was for everyone to enter the attack and defense calmly, but individuals may have been too focused on attacking. I think the imbalance between attack and defense led to conceding a goal."
