[Player and Coach Comments]

A match aimed at victory, united to break the losing streak

In Sec. 10 of the league, we will face Albirex Niigata away. In the ACL match against Brisbane Roar on May 2, we achieved our first four goals of the season and secured our advancement to the Round of 16. On the other hand, we are currently on a three-game losing streak in the league. Unlike the ACL, where our opponents have analyzed and prepared strategies against us, there are aspects where we cannot play our style of football as we wish. However, we want to approach this match with the same speed in passing and bold attitude we showed in the Brisbane match, aiming to stop the losing streak.

Niigata currently has 2 wins, 2 draws, and 5 losses, placing them 16th. Although they are positioned lower in the rankings, they secured a victory against Hiroshima in the last match by exploiting the opponent's weaknesses from their solid defense. They have conceded a total of 8 goals so far. On the other hand, their total of 5 goals scored is the lowest in the league, but they originally rely on counterattacks from a strong defense. "Even if we are dominated by the opponent, we stick to our strategy and patiently exploit their weaknesses. There is no hesitation in that," Gonda said.

Tokyo has changed its lineup from the match against Brisbane. Tokunaga replaces Hyun Soo JANG, while Miku Hara returns on the right side and Ota on the left side, with Lucas positioned as the lone striker. The focus will be on correcting the defensive issues that have led to consecutive goals conceded, and above all, how to score, as the team has only managed one goal in the last three matches during a losing streak while holding the initiative.

The difficulty of the league matches, along with the injuries to Hirayama, Ohtake, and Tanabe, complicates the team composition, but above all, it is a fiercely contested J1 League. Each situation and each match will determine the outcome. We want to maintain our perseverance and concentration, unite as one, and aim for victory to gain confidence by earning 3 points away. The match started at 19:04 with Niigata's kickoff at the chilly DENKA BIG SWAN STADIUM, where the rain had stopped but the cold remained.

Although they controlled the match, they could not create any scoring opportunities, and it remained scoreless into the second half.

From the start of the first half, they aggressively launched attacks. In the 3rd minute, starting from Morishige, they advanced the ball, and Takahashi connected after clearing Ota's left cross, with Kajiyama taking a grounded shot from the middle. However, it went wide. In the 11th minute, Lucas chased the opposing DF, stole the ball on the right side, and passed it to Kajiyama who followed to the near post. Although he was contested by the opposing DF and couldn't take a shot, Tanizawa, who rushed in on the loose ball, took a shot from straight on. It was a decisive moment, but it was saved well by the Niigata GK, resulting in a corner kick.

Niigata gradually begins to counterattack. In the 23rd minute, Niigata's left midfielder Tanaka makes a dribble and charges towards Tokunaga, resulting in a foul-like challenge. The match continues without stopping, and a shot is taken from near the left corner of the area. This grazes the post and bounces back for a corner kick. In the 28th minute, a dribble leads to the central FW Micheu, who passes to the left FW Bruno Lopes, but the cross goes out of bounds, and they are saved by the opponent's mistake.

Although they created scenes of being attacked afterwards, they did not allow any goals, centered around Gonda. In the 35th minute, from a big side change from Ota to Kajiyama on the left side, Tanizawa broke into the right area but could not shoot, only managing to earn a right corner kick. Furthermore, they connected this corner kick with a short pass, and Hanyu at the near post entered a shooting position but was blocked. They spent most of the time advancing in the opponent's half, but could not create any decisive chances. In defense, they maintained their concentration and went into halftime without giving the opponent any real chances.

Following Kajiwara's opening goal, Tanizawa also added a point, securing a victory without conceding any goals.

At halftime, Coach Popovic instructed, "Be more aware of shooting," and this bore fruit early in the second half. In the 51st minute, Tokunaga's vertical pass was kept by Lucas. He passed it to Mukuara, who overlapped on the side, delivering a fast cross. In the center, Kajiyama took a direct volley shot as the opposing defender closed in, scoring into the left side of the net to take the lead. However, after that, they allowed Niigata to counterattack.

Even so, in the final moments, he firmly positioned himself to block. Then, he began to regain the flow and shifted to attack. In the 59th minute, Takahashi's cross was received by Kajiyama just in front of the right area, and his controlled shot with his right foot aimed boldly for the middle, grazing the DF and the post... resulting in a corner kick. In the 62nd minute, Ishikawa was brought on for Hanyu, aiming for an even more aggressive additional goal. In the 65th minute, from a counter, Ota passed to Ishikawa, who broke forward with a speedy dribble, but the opposing DF also returned, preventing a shot.

Then, in the 71st minute, a throw-in on the right side in the opponent's territory. From Miku Hara's long throw, Lucas in the right area competed with the opponent, and the ball spilled from the opponent's defender's feet, which was neatly tapped in by Tanizawa who reacted in the left area for a goal! They secured the additional point they wanted. After that, they maintained a solid defense without losing their attacking posture. In the 86th minute, from Tanizawa's left free kick, Kajiyama, who had moved forward, dropped the ball, and Hasegawa, just behind him, shot but missed the target. In the end, they won with a stable performance throughout the match without conceding a goal, stopping the losing streak.

【Player Comments】《Kajiama》"Everyone had the desire to win, and I think we were able to express that and fight. We endured in the first half, and it was good that we were able to score two goals in the second half. (About the goal. It was your first goal in the league, right?) I was free, so I was able to connect well with Kenta's cross. We've been playing together for a long time, so I was glad to score from Kenta's ball... I aimed for the far side with an instep shot, but I didn't hit it perfectly (laughs). However, it rolled nicely at a good angle, so maybe it turned out well after all..."

I play as an attacking midfielder, so I believe I need to score more goals. The coach has always told me, 'Don't miss your shooting opportunities,' and I am trying to maintain a high awareness of shooting from practice, but I want to create more of 'our style.' Today, I was able to create situations where I moved forward after exchanging passes with Rucon, but I want to increase those kinds of plays.

Gonda: "We had three consecutive losses in the league, but since there was an ACL match in between, the team's atmosphere wasn't bad. In the match against Brisbane, we took control and launched a fluid attack, so personally, I wanted to carry that momentum into the league matches. I think today we were able to dominate the game and achieve a result that matched that performance. I believe it was the first time we were able to control and dominate like this."

However, after watching today's match, the opponent will surely study us. Especially Sapporo, ACL Ulsan, and Tosu... we will continue to face organized teams. Just because we broke through the opponent today does not guarantee we can do it again next time. To carry today's victory into the next match, I want to ensure we can grow another level in practice. Right now, our record is just 'a win rate of 50% plus one win.' I believe that to truly compete for the top, we need to start winning consecutively from here.

[Full Transcript of Coach Popovic's Press Conference] "I believe we were able to play a smart and high-quality match today. As this match has proven, we are a team that can dominate the game from start to finish, regardless of whether we are at home or away. I think we were able to control the game well, continue to attack, and show the attitude to go for goals, and I believe we played in a way that deserved the result. Furthermore, it is important to remember that we have a tough ACL match on Wednesday, and the fact that we were able to show consecutive high-quality matches, including today's game, is something that can be further appreciated, and I would like to express my gratitude to the players who fought today.

The important thing is to continue this. What I would like everyone to consider is that I don't want you to judge solely based on results. During the three consecutive losses, there were many questions about the losing streak, but I hope you understand soccer and think about the direction we are heading in and what kind of team we will become in the future, and I want you to watch soccer with that perspective.

[Summary of Coach Kurosaki's Press Conference] "Today, during the Golden Week, many supporters came out, and it is very frustrating to have such a result. I feel deeply sorry for not being able to perform well. We were able to create a solid block and launch quick counterattacks in the first half. However, after entering the second half, conceding a goal at that time made it very difficult. Even in that situation, we tried to change the system to score, but conceding the second goal was very significant."

If we don't reduce mistakes in situations like that, it will be difficult to win in the league. Given the current situation, scoring 2 or 3 goals is also challenging. I believe that if we fought tenaciously even after conceding 1 goal and connected to equalize, there would have been a possibility. I think the second goal today was a significant point.
