[Player and Coach Comments]
Restart of the league, we want to break through Yokohama FM's solid defense and seize the momentum
After finishing the ACL in the Round of 16, the league will resume after about a two-week interval. In Sec. 14, we will face Yokohama F.Marinos away. During this break, we conducted hard training in a camp-like format, including secondary practices. Takahashi and Gonda participated in the Japan national team's World Cup final qualifiers, and the time they had to join the team was limited, but they prepared calmly and are ready for a fresh start. This is an important match where we want to secure a good win in our first game after the resumption and gain momentum.
Yokohama FM currently has 4 wins, 6 draws, and 3 losses, placing them in 9th position. In the early part of the season, they lost many close matches, but they have managed to regroup, remaining unbeaten in their last 8 official matches since April 28, with 5 wins and 3 draws. The last 3 matches, including the Nabisco Cup, have all ended in scoreless draws, but breaking through their solid defense, led by defenders Nakazawa and Kurihara, will not be easy.
On the other hand, while Yokohama FM's attack is said to lack scoring ability, players like FW Marquinhos possess high finishing skills. With precise kicks from MF Nakamura and Hyodo, as well as the dribbling breakthroughs from MF Saito, they have players who are strong in crucial moments as substitutes, making it a battle where one cannot afford to let their guard down for even a moment.
In order to enhance ball possession and seize the rhythm, we want to take the initiative in defense and win the ball back. To fully execute our accumulated style of football, including in attack, maintaining quick transitions between offense and defense and not losing in running will be key. Additionally, Tokyo is on the verge of its 150th win in J1. Coincidentally, we are facing this match at Nissan Stadium, where we achieved our first victory in J1 in 2000. Although the rain is not heavy, the match started at 19:04 with a kickoff from Yokohama FM under the rainy season sky.
Yokohama FM took control and allowed the opening goal, leading to a difficult situation.
From the beginning, Yokohama FM seized the rhythm with their speedy attacks. Tokyo defended with physicality along the back line and continued to clear the ball, but they repeatedly gave away corners and free kicks to Yokohama FM, leading to pressure from set pieces. In the 9th minute, Watanabe held the ball on the right flank and passed it back to Tanizawa, who brought it inside and took a shot from distance, but ultimately, this was the only shot Tokyo had in the first half. The pressure from Yokohama FM's midfield was intense, and Tokyo could not connect their passes as time went on.
In the 14th minute, Yokohama FM created a decisive opportunity. From the right side, MF Nakamura passed to overlapping SB Kobayashi, who sent a through ball to central FW Marquinhos. FW Marquinhos made a direct pass behind Tokyo DF. FW Ono broke through from the right side, creating a crisis, but Takahashi quickly returned and slid to deflect it for a corner kick. In the 20th minute, Tokyo DF was breached by Yokohama FM's FW Ono, who received a pass and shot, shaking the net, but this was ruled offside.
They managed to avoid conceding a goal until the very last moment, but in the 31st minute, they couldn't stop Yokohama FM's midfielder Hyodo's advance and were positioned between Tokunaga and Morishige. Here, the other midfielder MF Tomizawa delivered a ground vertical pass. It was perfectly received at their feet, and immediately turned around to strike a shot from the left area... they allowed the first goal...
With this, Yokohama FM completely seized the momentum, and Tokyo was unable to create any real chances, leading to a difficult situation. Therefore, in the 37th minute, Kaga was brought in as a center back in place of Mukuahara, and Tokunaga moved to the right side back position to prepare for a counterattack.
Despite launching a counterattack with all our strength, we suffered a defeat in power...
At the same time, in the second half, in place of the injured Ota, Futoshi NAKAMURA, who made his first appearance of the season, was brought in as a left side back in an attempt to regroup. In the 48th minute, they launched a counterattack, and Tanizawa tried to break free on the right front line, but he was closely marked by Yokohama FM's left back Dutura, and he couldn't take a shot. In the 49th minute, NAKAMURA's decisive vertical dribble earned a left corner kick, and they attempted a short corner, but it was cleared in the center.
In the 61st minute, a pass was connected to Kajiyama from the right to the center. Surrounded by defenders, he couldn't take a shot, but Lucas connected with the loose ball, and Watanabe earned a right corner kick with a middle-range shot. Finally, Tokyo started to show some movement and rhythm, but amidst the ongoing struggle for the ball, they couldn't create a decisive chance.
In the 64th minute, Kono was brought on for Watanabe as a right MF, changing the formation with Lucas moving to the top. They tried to utilize Kono's movement to get behind the opponent, but mistakes in the buildup phase prevented them from finding an effective attacking shape. In the 66th minute, they lost the ball due to a mistake, which was picked up by Yokohama's FW Marquinhos, but Kaga responded quickly and avoided the crisis. In the 70th minute, Moriwaki was judged to have fouled Yokohama's MF Saito during his dribble, resulting in a free kick from the center of the penalty arc. Yokohama FM's MF Nakamura aimed directly at the goal, and although it flew towards the target, Gonda made a save just in time, hitting the bar!
Although they did not allow an additional goal, in the 79th minute, Kono made a run behind the opponent to meet Lucas's pass from the left side, but the ball was just a bit too long... GK catch. In the 84th minute, Kono tried to make a run to meet Morishige's feed to the front line, but the Yokohama GK caught it a step earlier.
In the final stages, Takahashi entered the DF line to form a three-back, and Kajiyama moved to the defensive midfield. With Tokunaga and Nakamura on the wings, they attempted to increase the number of players in the front line with Lucas, Kono, and Tanizawa to launch a counterattack. However, in the 86th minute, the ball sent forward by Kajiyama did not reach Kono, and the opposing DF cleared it. Hasegawa, who intercepted the loose ball in midfield, took a step forward and shot, but it lacked power and went wide of the goal. Unable to create an attacking shape until the end, Tokyo managed only three shots in total. The match ended without any time left, resulting in a defeat that felt more significant than the score difference...
[Player Comments] {Tokunaga} "The opponent's pressure was tough, and we lost control completely. We couldn't pick up the second balls, and the opponent was quicker off the mark. We had less movement, and rather than game sense, we might have lacked the mentality to win. We were flustered from the first half and couldn't settle down. The opponent's two forwards targeted our back and were also able to receive the ball at their feet... In response, we were indecisive about whether to apply pressure from the front or to create a solid block, which allowed them to move freely. I want to discuss that and unify our intentions. We need to fight with a sense of urgency."
"Gonda: There are matches like this... but we can't just brush it off. F. Marinos certainly had a solid defense, and each player was strong in one-on-one situations. If we were completely inferior and suffered a total defeat, then we have to accept that... My impression is that it's not that we couldn't do it; it's more like we couldn't execute what we had been able to do until now... That's why each of us needs to reflect. Today, we were pushed back early on from the opponent's corner kicks and free kicks, and we struggled. I believe that was because we weren't fully prepared for how to start the match. Considering that, I feel that if we just do what we need to do as professionals, we could change things easily... However, if what I felt is the reason, then I think we need to prepare from scratch again. Since the next match is at home, we absolutely cannot have a game like this again."
[Summary of Coach Popovic's Press Conference] "It was truly a sad match. If I had to point out one good thing, it would be that not everything was bad. I want this kind of match to be the last one today. Perhaps there were players who still didn't know that the league had resumed, or players who had just returned from vacation or national duty. The quality of play was also not good. Still, it might have been lucky that we kept the score to a minimum."
I am truly grateful for the Tokyo fans and supporters who cheered for us for 90 minutes, and I want to make sure to correct the fact that I couldn't deliver a performance that met their expectations. I have incurred a debt to the fans and supporters. I believe in repaying what I owe, so I want to repay the debt created today in a good way. That said, it's important to think positively, as even big teams have days like this. I want to regroup and prepare for the next challenge.
(Do you think of yourself as a good loser? While everything was bad, what was the worst part?) One of my least favorite words is good loser. The fact that it includes the word loser makes it unpleasant. However, every team experiences losses, and it can happen over a long season. The issue today was that we lacked our ideas and fighting spirit in how we lost. That is what I am most dissatisfied with.
We couldn't create a single decisive chance today. What is the purpose of our training if this is the case? The important thing is not to repeat this. Let's make today the last day like this. I know what to do to prepare for the next match, and the players were also very exhausted in today's game.
[Yokohama FM Coach Higuchi's Press Conference Summary] "I want to express my joy at being able to secure 3 points in the first match after the league's restart. In the first half, we had a nearly perfect defense that prevented the opponent from playing freely. In the second half, we also did not allow the opponent to play freely, and there was a sense of unity as a team. (What do you communicate to the players?) Among the team's agreements, I emphasize the importance of maintaining distance. A key point is not to drop back the moment we switch from attack to defense. I communicate the importance of maintaining distance overall, and even if the opponent breaks through, we need to focus on creating a block with the right spacing."
The performance was very good, but if I had to be greedy, I think it will be tough in the summer if we can't secure the game by scoring a second goal. Today, I am really satisfied with the players' concentration, individual skills, and the team's objectives being executed, but it was a match where we needed to score a second goal. I want to make scoring that second goal a focus as we head into the next game.
