[Player/Coach Comments]
2013 Season Begins! Let's win the first game and ride the momentum to victory.
The long-awaited 2013 J-League season has begun. In their second season under coach Ranko Popovic, they faced Oita Trinita away. This season, Chun Son Lee, Keigo Higashi, Hirotaka Mita, and Hideyuki Nozawa have joined the team. They started on January 20th and have been preparing for the season with a camp in Okinawa and Miyazaki, as well as practice matches and preseason matches. They aim to build on what they achieved last season and further improve the quality and precision of their play to achieve their goal of winning titles.
Oita, on the other hand, finished 6th in last season's J2, but secured promotion to J1 dramatically in the playoffs. The goal of manager Tagasaka, who took over last season, is "all-out attack, all-out defense" through hard work. This season, that mindset has permeated the team, and with a 3-1-4-2 formation, quick transitions between offense and defense, and a strong defense and sharp counterattacks will be their biggest weapons. For Oita, this is their first J1 stage in 4 seasons, achieved after overcoming various struggles. Starting this journey at home will surely be a great advantage.
Tokyo, with the addition of Lucas who had left the team, has now completed its roster. Today, Morishige and Kaga will play as center backs, with Yonemoto and Takahashi as double pivots. Hasegawa and Lucas will be on the left and right wings, respectively, with Azuma as the attacking midfielder and Watanabe as the lone striker. Morishige, who has been named game captain for this season, declared, "A good start is crucial for winning the title. We will be careful of Oita's counterattacks and focus on playing good passes and attacking with determination."
East promises to demonstrate the sense of accomplishment they have gained so far on the pitch, not doing anything half-heartedly and attacking relentlessly, even if they lose the ball, they will quickly switch and continue their play for 90 minutes. By doing so, they are confident that the results will follow. They aim to fully showcase Tokyo's style and bring back 3 points home with a persistent and determined battle. The match started at 19:04 at Oita Bank Dome with a match against their former team, Oita.
Watanabe's skillful shot scores, and the first half ends in a tie.
They calmly passed the ball and took control from the start of the first half. In the 9th minute, Tokunaga's long feed was cleared by the opposing DF. Hasegawa picked it up in the center of the area and advanced, drawing the DF and freeing up East on the left. He cut back against the approaching DF and took a shot, but it hit the bar. In the 13th minute, Tokunaga exchanged passes with Hasegawa and East on the right side, then passed vertically to Watanabe in the center. He controlled it perfectly at his feet and immediately turned to take a shot, but it went over the bar.
Despite creating multiple scoring opportunities and maintaining a Tokyo pace, they allowed the first goal in a moment of carelessness. In the 17th minute, Oita's left corner kick was connected by MF Kimura and crossed into the left area by MF Che John-han, slipping past everyone and into the goal. Tokyo was caught off guard by Oita's one chance. However, Tokyo continued to attack with their passing game without getting flustered. In the 25th minute, Lucas broke through on the right side and sent a lob pass to Takahashi in front of the goal. Hasegawa attempted to finish it off, but was unable to do so.
Then, in the 26th minute, Takahashi's cross to the right was received by Watanabe, who dropped back and slid from right to left in front of the area, and passed it to Hasegawa in the area. He received the return and took a direct shot, which brilliantly pierced the bottom left corner to equalize. In the 35th minute, Lucas on the right front line crossed. Watanabe in the center headed it perfectly, but it went straight to the goalkeeper. Despite creating more chances, they were unable to score and the first half ended.
Hasegawa's comeback goal was born, and the opening game was decorated with a victory.
Tokyo continues to dominate in the second half. In the 51st minute, Hasegawa sprinted down the left side. He made a minus last pass to the open space in the center of the area. Lukon ran in from the opposite side, but narrowly missed. In the 56th minute, Tokunaga broke through on the right side and earned a corner kick. From the kick, Takahashi headed the ball, but the GK saved it. However, Hasegawa intercepted the ball thrown by the opposing GK and floated it over the GK who had come out, scoring an unguarded goal. An unexpected goal was added.
After that, they were pushed back by a strong attack from Oita. In the 62nd minute, Oita had a FK from the right side. MF Kimura kicked it in front of the goal. DF Takagi headed it with a high impact, but it missed the frame and they escaped danger. In the 70th minute, MF Che Jong-han showed his ball control in the left area for Oita, and FW Nishi crossed from the left. However, it didn't connect in the center. In an attempt to change the flow, Tokyo substituted Watanabe for Lee in the 72nd minute. Then, right after, Lucas broke through the right area and made a minus last pass to the center. Lee took the shot, but it was saved by the GK and resulted in a CK.
In the final stages, Tokyo brought in Ishikawa to replace Higashi and create scoring opportunities on the counter against Oita, who were attacking relentlessly. In the 90th minute, Ishikawa intercepted the ball in his own half and played a through pass behind the opposing DF. Lee caught up to the long ball and found himself in a 1-on-1 situation with the goalkeeper, but his shot was saved. Later, Lee dribbled past a DF from the right side and cut inside, but his shot went wide. Ishikawa's sharp dribbling also created chances, but they were unable to capitalize. The match ended with Tokyo securing a comeback victory, playing calmly and without panic.
[Player Comments]
《Watanabe》"We were able to create a coordinated attack with everyone involved in the ball. The opening game is always difficult as every team comes in with high motivation. In that situation, it was good to be able to earn 3 points away and take on the responsibility of the FW... If the FW scores, the team can also get on a roll. It was also good that we were able to play offensively as a whole. (About the goal) First, I received the ball outside the penalty area and turned forward. I saw Aria and passed to her, and when the ball came back, I tried to stop it once. But then I saw the course and took a bold shot. I think it was the best decision in that situation. (About myself this season) There are many good FWs in the team, and there has been fierce competition since I joined last season. So I have the feeling that I can't lose and I wanted to produce results today as well."
"Hasegawa": "I think we were able to have a good attack not only from the goal scene, but also from the third movement from a good pass and using post-play and middle. Personally, if I play in front of the midfielder, I was thinking of focusing on scoring and assisting. I think it was good that we were able to do that in the opening game. However, we knew that Oita would come up with trick plays and sign plays. Last season, we had a lot of unfortunate goals from set plays, so that is something we need to reflect on and work on today. We need to increase our concentration and sustain it. Personally, I feel like my mind and body are in sync when I am in good shape. However, I think it's okay to be happy today, but I want to work hard to win with better content for the long season without being satisfied with this result."
[Coach Popovich's Press Conference Summary]
"I think it was a very good game. The only regrettable thing was that we conceded a goal by being caught off guard for a moment. We knew from the beginning that Oita's set pieces were accurate, and I feel that we need to work on fixing the issue of losing concentration and conceding goals. However, in terms of the game itself and how we played, I believe we deserved to come back and win. We were able to calmly and intelligently control the game, and I think we executed what we had been working on well on the pitch. We created many clear chances from the flow of the game. It's a shame that we couldn't convert those chances into goals. If we look at the number of chances, I think we could have scored more goals."
Oita is a dangerous team that defends organizationally and launches accurate counters from there. I think that teams that will face Oita from now on will taste the fear of being next to their counters. Kaga unexpectedly had to be substituted due to injury, but Hyun Soo JANG, who came in as a replacement, played well. This is what I always demand from my players, to be prepared to give their best no matter what the situation. I think they showed that not only the starting 11, but all players fought together. Ishikawa and Lee, who came in as substitutes, also did the same. I believe they were able to focus and perform as if they had started from the beginning.
[Summary of Oita Tazaka's press conference]
"I wanted to win, but I think it was a result that could have ended in a draw. Of course, we knew we would be pushed back, but we have to fight this season. We were able to defend ourselves in the first and second half, and we were able to attack and threaten the goal with counterattacks. After conceding the second goal, we were able to show our attacking width. We need to work on the fact that we didn't have enough chances. We have to challenge every opponent in J1 this season. This game was a reminder of that. I think the players also realized that it's not easy. I told them, "Don't look down. We have to face this stage this season and improve and raise our quality even more."
