[Player/Coach Comments]
Looking to finish with a win, the last game at the Japan National Stadium
League Sec. 10 will be held. We will welcome Nagoya Grampus at our home ground, National Stadium. In the previous match, we successfully defended against all of the goals raised by the opponent and achieved victory with 3 consecutive clean sheets in official matches. In this match as well, we will demonstrate our strong determination for victory and high defensive awareness as a team, aiming for growth and consecutive wins step by step.
Nagoya, who will face them, is currently in 15th place with 9 points. Although Nagoya, who welcomed new coach Akira NISHINO this season, won three consecutive games in the 2nd to 4th rounds, they have lost five consecutive games since then. They have been struggling with injuries and have been experimenting, such as using midfielder Danilson as a center back and forward Yano as a side back. However, this round will see the return of forward Tamada and defender Otake, who will start in the lineup.
Manager Massimo says, "Nagoya has many experienced players and we cannot underestimate them. The fact that they have been on a losing streak does not concern us at all." In order to prevent Nagoya's attack led by FW Tamada and the speed of FW Nagai, Tokyo will press from the front line as they did in the previous match and aim to connect good defense to good offense.
Above all, it's a battle at home. We want to grab the victory without losing our aggressive attitude. However, Kono and Hanyu are not in perfect condition and are out of the lineup. We will face the match with the same starting lineup as the previous round, despite having only two days of rest.
The game started at 1:04 PM with Nagoya's kickoff, with a cloudy sky and no sign of rain, and the temperature was cool.
Unable to connect to the attack, allowed Nagoya to attack but scoreless.
Both teams pressed from the front line at the start, trying to create chances. In the 3rd minute, Watanabe aggressively closed in on the Nagoya GK, and Yamamoto on the right side intercepted the pass. East then connected with the front and Hiraoka attacked from the far side. However, East was unable to deliver a cross and the ball was cleared for a throw-in. In the 5th minute, Nagoya also pressed MoriShige, who was trying to hold the ball in the DF line. Although it seemed like they would lose the ball, Gonda quickly came out to cover.
At 10 minutes, Ota sent an early cross and earned four consecutive CKs, but they were unable to capitalize on the chances. In the 25th minute, Yoshimoto also headed from the right CK by Higashino, but it went over the frame. As time passed, Nagoya was able to pass the ball around Tokyo's press and create more opportunities near the goal. In response, Tokyo changed their formation to a 4-4-2, similar to Nagoya's. They also concentrated on defending as a back line, successfully containing Nagoya's attacks.
At 37 minutes, Nagoya's clearance went to Mita in the opponent's territory. From there, a counterattack was launched, with Hirayama advancing in the center and a final pass to the left area to Higashi. Higashi tried to get past the opponent's DF but couldn't find an angle and couldn't take the shot. At 43 minutes, Mita aimed for a middle shot but it went to the right. Despite Nagoya gaining momentum, they were able to withstand the time and ended the first half with a scoreless tie.
Conceded a goal from a corner kick at the start of the second half, but couldn't turn the tide...
Tokyo tried to make a move by substituting Muto for Mita in the second half. However, in the 46th minute, Nagoya's FW Nagai → MF Ogawa in the area was caught off guard by RM Edamura. This led to consecutive corner kicks, and in the 48th minute, Nagoya's MF Ogawa's right corner kick was headed in by FW Yano in the near post... giving up the first goal. This was the turning point for Nagoya to gain momentum. Nagai's speed was utilized and allowed for multiple entries into the area, but each time Yoshimoto stopped them with determined plays and did not allow any additional goals.
Tokyo substituted Matsumoto for Tokunaga in the 55th minute. Ota and Matsumoto moved up one line in a 3-4-3 formation. Up front, Hirayama led the attack with Watanabe and Muto on the sides. In the 56th minute, Nagoya countered from a corner kick. Muto received the ball up front, passed it to Matsumoto who then sent a lob pass into the box. Hirayama received the ball and passed it back, allowing Watanabe to take a shot from the left side, hitting the crossbar...
In the 69th minute, Ota's early cross was headed by Hirayama in front of the goal, but it was saved by the GK... In the midst of intense counterattacks, Edu was brought in in the 76th minute. However, Nagoya also brought in MF Danilson to try and contain Tokyo's side attacks.
In the 80th minute, Mutoh regained possession in the midfield and charged into the left area. However, the center's Hirayama couldn't take the final pass, but Edu was there to follow up with a shot! However, the shot was just barely saved by the GK... The end of the game turned into a back-and-forth battle, but both teams lacked finishing power. In the 82nd minute, Mutoh broke through on the left side and cut inside, taking a shot himself, but the GK caught it in the bottom corner. In the 88th minute, Takahashi intercepted and pushed up to the sideline, earning a right corner kick. Ota's kick was headed down by Yoshimoto, causing a scramble in front of the goal, but they couldn't break through Nagoya's solid defense... Despite a fierce comeback effort, they fell to Nagoya's one goal. They couldn't end their "last National Stadium" with a victory.
[Player Comments]
"Matsumoto"
"I saw it as an opportunity to come out aggressively since we were losing 0-1. Of course, I also considered the defensive balance and took a high position on the side to score. I aimed for vertical breakthroughs, carried the ball forward with my first touch, and was able to send crosses and passes into the box. I think I was able to showcase my strengths, but it's disappointing and frustrating that it didn't lead to a goal."
"Takahashi"
"It was a really frustrating defeat. In the first half, Nagoya not only played vertical passes, but also shook us up horizontally. We wanted to have a horizontal awareness as well when the ball was swung to the side, but I think we lacked the courage to take care of the ball. However, instead of just reflecting on the loss, we are trying to grow by organizing what we did and didn't do when we win. We want to switch mentally while identifying points for reflection as usual and head to the next match."
[Summary of Massimo FICCADENTI's press conference]
"In the first half, both teams played a solid tactical game, canceling each other's space and creating a close match. Even after conceding a goal, we were able to create many chances from set pieces. There was a period of struggle for about 5 minutes after conceding, but we were able to assess the situation and respond accordingly. After that, we were able to control the game and create many decisive chances, such as Mori Shige's header, Watanabe's shot, and Edu's shot. It was a physically demanding game, but I want to give credit to the players for fighting with all their might. We knew that Nagoya had high-quality players like MF Danilson and FW Tamada. As a characteristic of the J-League in Japan, the level of competition is close. We knew it would be a difficult game. We warned the players that Nagoya's front line is filled with high-quality players, so if we allow dangerous balls, it could lead to chances for them."
(Regarding Matsuda's substitution)
There was an intention to attack from the side. Matsuda demonstrated his speed and accuracy in crossing. Ota from the opposite side also made continuous attacks and created chances with accurate crosses. I think both of them fought well.
[Nagoya - Manager Akira NISHINO's Press Conference Summary]
"We had a string of games where we couldn't get results. This match was also a close battle, but we managed to pull through and get a result, which I believe will bring about changes for future matches. There were still many areas where we were lacking, but I could feel the determination even in this situation. It was a very tough game, but I think the result is everything."
