<About the Tamagawa Clasico>
Since the JFL era in 1997, both clubs have been fierce rivals, competing intensely and creating numerous dramatic matches. Especially in 1999, the first year of J2, Tokyo Gas rebranded as FC Tokyo with the ambition to join the J1 League. Both clubs fought hard in the promotion race and succeeded in being promoted to the J1 League together. Kawasaki Frontale was relegated to J2 after one year but was promoted again in 2005, and the two clubs have since continued their intense battles.
The history of battling while elevating each other in this land divided by the Tamagawa River shows excitement that rivals the "derbies" held in other cities. Moving forward, we will cherish the history of both sides and aim to establish this battle as a tradition. Therefore, we have named it "Tamagawa Clasico," combining the symbol that separates the two clubs, the "Tamagawa," with the Spanish word "Clasico," which means "traditional match."
The name "Tamagawa Classico" started in 2007, but to honor the history of fierce battles between FC Tokyo and Kawasaki Frontale, it is counted as "Tamagawa Classico" from the battles in 1999, the inaugural year of J2. There were a total of 10 matches from 1999 to 2006. The project started in 2007, and the first match, held on May 6, 2007, during Kawasaki Frontale's home game, was designated as the "11th Tamagawa Classico."
In the future, we will continue to strive together so that we can build our history with 50, 100, 200 matches, and more.
The current match record is 10 wins, 9 draws, and 19 losses for FC Tokyo.
Both clubs have agreed that only matches counted as the Tamagawa Classico will be from the 'league matches' only. (Matches in cup competitions, including the Emperor's Cup, will not be counted.)
